The founding of the People's Republic of China 70 years ago was one of the greatest and most important events in world history in the 20th century, said the Hungarian party leader in an interview with Xinhua.

BUDAPEST, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- The achievements China has made under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) are "a historic testament to the victory of socialism with Chinese characteristics," Gyula Thurmer, the president of the Hungarian Workers' Party, said recently.

The founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC) 70 years ago was one of the greatest and most important events in world history in the 20th century, said the Hungarian party leader in an interview with Xinhua.

In seven decades, China has managed to well feed its population of nearly 1.4 billion, ensure them a high standard of living and provide a secure future for the rising generations, Thurmer said.

The world sees that China is a leading country in many areas of research, including 5G networks and space exploration, said Thurmer.

Noting that China applied socialism with Chinese characteristics, he stressed that the great achievements made by China in the past 70 years prove that such a way of development is viable.

As regards the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Thurmer said that "the BRI ensures that various countries in the world are involved in a common interest."

"The basic principle of this initiative is win-win," he said, noting that the BRI is not only about economic and sci-tech cooperation, but also about cultural exchanges.

On building a community with a shared future for mankind, a concept put forward by Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Hungarian party leader said that "this is a good way for the world to live together peacefully."

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Hungary and China. Thurmer said he is glad that Hungary is among the first to recognize the PRC in 1949 and to establish diplomatic ties with Beijing.

Hailing the frequent exchanges between governments of the two countries in recent years, Thurmer said he supports the current Hungarian government for "its excellent China policy."

During the interview, Thurmer showed Xinhua the book "Xi Jinping: The Governance of China" on his office desk, saying that he reads Xi's book very often and this book helps him understand socialism with Chinese characteristics.

"Fortunately, the first volume has been translated in Hungarian, and I hope the second volume will be translated soon," he said.
